the LORD[YHWH]:
On the import of the word yehowah, which we translate Lord, see note on "And Godª saidª° moreoverª unto¹ Moses,ª Thus¹ shalt thou sayª° unto¹ the childrenª of Israel,ª The LORDª Godª of your fathers,ª the Godª of Abraham,ª the Godª of Isaac,ª and the Godª of Jacob,ª hath sentª° me unto¹ you: this¹ [is] my nameª for ever,ª and this¹ [is] my memorialª unto all² generations.ª" {Exd 3:15}. The word elohim, which is rendered God, in the singular, eloah, and in Arabic allah, is derived from the Arabic alaha, he worshipped, adored, was struck with astonishment, fear, or terror, and hence, he adored with sacred honour and veneration. It also signifies, he succoured, liberated, kept in safety, or defended. Here we learn that elohim denotes the sole object of adoration; the perfections of whose nature must astonish all who contemplate them, and fill with horror all who rebel against him; that consequently he must be worshipped with reverence and religious fear; and that every sincere worshipper may expect help in all his weaknesses, etc., freedom from the power, guilt, and consequences of sin, and support and defence to the uttermost.
a jealous God:
"For¹ thou shalt worshipª° no¹ otherª god:ª for¹ the LORD,ª whose nameª [is] Jealous,ª [is] a jealousª God:ª" {Exd 34:14}
visiting:
"Keepingª° mercyª for thousands,ª forgivingª° iniquityª and transgressionª and sin,ª and that will by no means²° clearª°¹ [the guilty]; visitingª° the iniquityª of the fathersª upon¹ the children,ª and upon¹ the children'sª children,¹ unto¹ the thirdª and to¹ the fourthª [generation]." {Exd 34:7} + "Thou shewestª° lovingkindnessª unto thousands,ª and recompensestª° the iniquityª of the fathersª into¹ the bosomª of their childrenª afterª them: the Great,ª the Mightyª God,ª the LORDª of hosts,ª [is] his name,ª" {Jer 32:18} + "And I prayedª° unto the LORDª my God,ª and made my confession,ª° and said,ª° Oª Lord,ª the greatª and dreadfulª° God,ª keepingª° the covenantª and mercyª to them that loveª° him, and to them that keepª° his commandments;ª ... To the Lordª our Godª [belong] merciesª and forgivenesses,ª though¹ we have rebelledª° against him;" {Dan 9:4-9} + "Thatª uponª youª may comeª° allª the righteousª bloodª shedª° uponª the¹ earth,ª fromª the¹ bloodª of righteousª Abelª untoª the¹ bloodª of Zachariasª sonª of Barachias,ª whomª ye slewª° betweenª the¹ templeª andª the¹ altar.ª ... Verilyª I sayª° unto you,ª Allª these thingsª shall comeª° uponª thisª generation.ª" {Mtt 23:35-36} + "As concerningªª the¹ gospel,ª [they are] enemiesª for your sakes:ªª butª as touchingª the¹ election,ª [they are] belovedª for²° the fathers'² sakes.ª¹¹ ... Forª the¹ giftsª andª callingª of Godª [are] without repentance.ª" {Rom 11:28-29}
