- The LORD[YHWH] commanded:
- To one division of the tribe of Manasseh, a portion had been assigned eastward of Jordan; but Zelophehad was of that division, to which an inheritance was afterwards allotted west of Jordan; yet, expecting the promised land, the elders of the Manassites now propose a difficulty, upon the adjudged case of Zelophehad's daughters ( "Then cameª° the daughtersª of Zelophehad,ª the sonª of Hepher,ª the sonª of Gilead,ª the sonª of Machir,ª the sonª of Manasseh,ª of the familiesª of Manassehª the sonª of Joseph:ª and these¹ [are] the namesª of his daughters;ª Mahlah,ª Noah,ª and Hoglah,ª and Milcah,ª and Tirzah.ª ... And if¹ his fatherª have no¹ brethren,ª then ye shall giveª°¹ his inheritanceª unto his kinsmanª that is nextª to¹ him of his family,ª¹ and he shall possessª° it: and it shall be¹ unto the childrenª of Israelª a statuteª of judgment,ª as¹ the LORDª commandedª°¹ Moses.ª" {Num 27:1-11}). If the females should inherit, in defect of male issue, and should intermarry with other tribes they would diminish the interest, and weaken the influence of their own tribes, and give occasion to future confusion, and perhaps contention. The Manassites therefore referred the case to Moses; and he, by the authority of God, annexed a clause, which would effectually keep the tribes and inheritances distinct, as long as it was observed. Heiresses were not allowed to marry out of their own tribe, though within those bounds they might consult their own inclinations. "Notwithstanding¹¹ the landª shall be dividedª° by lot:ª according to the namesª of the tribesª of their fathersª they shall inherit.ª° ... According² to¹¹ the lotª shall the possessionª thereof be dividedª° between¹ manyª and few.ª" {Num 26:55-56} + "Then cameª° the daughtersª of Zelophehad,ª the sonª of Hepher,ª the sonª of Gilead,ª the sonª of Machir,ª the sonª of Manasseh,ª of the familiesª of Manassehª the sonª of Joseph:ª and these¹ [are] the namesª of his daughters;ª Mahlah,ª Noah,ª and Hoglah,ª and Milcah,ª and Tirzah.ª ... The daughtersª of Zelophehadª speakª° right:ª thou shalt surely²° giveª° them a possessionª of an inheritanceª amongª their father'sª brethren;ª and thou shalt cause¹ the inheritanceª of their fatherª to passª° unto them." {Num 27:1-7} + "And ye shall divideª°¹ the landª by lotª for an inheritance²° among your families:ª [and] to the moreª ye shall give the moreª°¹ inheritance,ª and to the fewerª ye shall give the lessª°¹ inheritance:ª every man's [inheritance] shall be¹ in the place where¹¹¹ his lotª falleth;ª° according to the tribesª of your fathersª ye shall inherit.ª°" {Num 33:54} + "All¹ the inhabitantsª° of the hill countryª from¹ Lebanonª unto¹ Misrephothmaim,ª [and] all¹ the Sidonians,ª them will I¹ drive outª° from beforeª¹ the childrenª of Israel:ª only¹ divide thou it by lotª° unto the Israelitesª for an inheritance,ª as¹ I have commandedª° thee." {Jsh 13:6} + "And these¹ [are the countries] which¹ the childrenª of Israelª inheritedª° in the landª of Canaan,ª which¹ Eleazarª the priest,ª and Joshuaª the sonª of Nun,ª and the headsª of the fathersª of the tribesª of the childrenª of Israel,ª distributed for inheritanceª° to them. ... By lotª [was] their inheritance,ª as¹ the LORDª commandedª° by the handª of Moses,ª for the nineª tribes,ª and [for] the halfª tribe.ª" {Jsh 14:1-2} + "But Zelophehad,ª the sonª of Hepher,ª the sonª of Gilead,ª the sonª of Machir,ª the sonª of Manasseh,ª had¹ no¹ sons,ª but¹¹ daughters:ª and these¹ [are] the namesª of his daughters,ª Mahlah,ª and Noah,ª Hoglah,ª Milcah,ª and Tirzah.ª" {Jsh 17:3}
