{Numbers 31:6} And Moses 4872 sent 7971 z8799 them to the war, 6635 a thousand 505 of [every] tribe, 4294 them and Phinehas 6372 the son 1121 of Eleazar 499 the priest, 3548 to the war, 6635 with the holy 6944 instruments, 3627 and the trumpets 2689 to blow 8643 in his hand. 3027

a thousand:
Twelve thousand in all - a small number in proportion to all Israel, or to the forces which they had to encounter. As they were under the conduct of captains of thousands and hundreds, they probably had no general; for Phinehas seems to have accompanied them simply to take charge of "the holy instruments;" probably the ark and silver trumpets.

Phinehas:
"And when Phinehas,ª the sonª of Eleazar,ª the sonª of Aaronª the priest,ª sawª ° [it], he rose upª ° from amongª ¹ the congregation,ª and tookª ° a javelinª in his hand;ª ... And he shall have¹ it, and his seedª afterª him, [even] the covenantª of an everlastingª priesthood;ª becauseª ¹ he was zealousª ° for his God,ª and made an atonementª ° for¹ the childrenª of Israel.ª" {Num 25:7-13}

the holy instruments:
"But they presumedª ° to go upª ° unto¹ the hillª top:ª nevertheless the arkª of the covenantª of the LORD,ª and Moses,ª departedª ° not¹ out² of¹ ¹ the camp.ª" {Num 14:44} + "And they departedª ° from Rimmonparez,ª ¹ and pitchedª ° in Libnah.ª ... to blow:
"And the sonsª of Aaron,ª the priests,ª shall blowª ° with the trumpets;ª and they shall be¹ to you for an ordinanceª for everª throughout your generations.ª ... And if¹ ye goª ° to warª in your landª against² ¹ the enemy¹ that oppressethª ° you, then ye shall blow an alarmª ° with the trumpets;ª and ye shall be rememberedª ° beforeª the LORDª your God,ª and ye shall be savedª ° from your enemies.ª °¹" {Num 10:8-9} + "And, behold,¹ Godª himself [is] with¹ us for [our] captain,ª and his priestsª with soundingª trumpetsª to cry alarmª ° against¹ you. O childrenª of Israel,ª fightª ° ye not¹ against¹ the LORDª Godª of your fathers;ª for¹ ye shall not¹ prosper.ª ° ...
