- high places:
- Bamoth baal, "the high places of Baal," probably the same as Bamoth mentioned in "And from Mattanahª¹ to Nahaliel:ª and from Nahalielª¹ to Bamoth:ª ... And from Bamothª¹ [in] the valley,ª that¹ [is] in the countryª of Moab,ª to the topª of Pisgah,ª which lookethª° towardª¹ Jeshimon.ª" {Num 21:19-20}; evidently not far from Baal-meon, in the mountains of Abarim. For the Israelites were now encamped in the plains of Moab, which these mountains overlook. Baal, which signifies a lord or governor, was a name common to many idols; and probably here was the same as Chemosh, the god of Moab. "And they calledª° the peopleª unto the sacrificesª of their gods:ª and the peopleª did eat,ª° and bowed downª° to their gods.ª ... And Israelª joined²° himself¹ unto Baalpeor:ª and the angerª of the LORDª was kindledª° against Israel.ª" {Num 25:2-3} + "Ye shall utterlyª° destroyª°¹ all¹ the places,ª wherein¹¹ the nationsª whichª¹ ye¹ shall possessª° servedª°¹ their gods,ª upon¹ the highª° mountains,ª and upon¹ the hills,ª and under¹ every¹ greenª tree:ª" {Deu 12:2} + "And he ordainedª° him priestsª for the high places,ª and for the devils,ª and for the calvesª which¹ he had made.ª°" {2Ch 11:15} + "Moreover I will cause to ceaseª° in Moab,ª saithª° the LORD,ª him that offerethª° in the high places,ª and him that burneth incenseª° to his gods.ª" {Jer 48:35}
