This law concerning sins of ignorance, being entirely diverse from one before considered, occasions considerable difficulty ("And the LORDª spakeª° unto¹ Moses,ª saying,ª° ... And he shall take awayª° all¹ the fatª thereof, as¹ the fatª of the lambª is taken awayª° from the sacrificeª¹ of the peace offerings;ª and the priestª shall burnª° them upon the altar,ª according to¹ the offerings made by fireª unto the LORD:ª and the priestª shall make an atonementª° for¹ his sinª that¹ he hath committed,ª° and it shall be forgivenª° him." {Lev 4:1-35}). Some explain that law as relating to sins of commission, this to sins of omission. Others explain the one of inadvertent violations of the moral law, and the other of the transgressions of the ceremonial law, and some think that related to the whole nation, this to any one tribe; or that to the bulk of the nation, this to the rulers and elders. The Jews say, that the former law referred to such national transgressions through heedlessness, as consisted with the maintenance of the prescribed worship in the main; but that this especially respected the case of the nation, when through inattention, and the example and authority of wicked rulers, they had turned aside and committed idolatry, or conducted their worship directly contrary to law; yet through a culpable ignorance, and not in presumption. This was evidently the case under several of their kings; and the explanation seems well grounded. "Speakª° unto¹ the childrenª of Israel,ª saying,ª° If¹ a soulª shall sinª° through ignoranceª against any¹¹ of the commandmentsª of the LORDª [concerning things] which¹ ought not¹ to be done,ª° and shall doª° against anyª¹ of them:ª¹" {Lev 4:2} + "And if¹ the whole¹ congregationª of Israelª sin through ignorance,ª° and the thingª be hidª° from the eyesª¹ of the assembly,ª and they have doneª° [somewhat against] any² of¹¹¹ the commandmentsª of the LORDª [concerning things] which¹ should not¹ be done,ª° and are guilty;ª° ... When the sin,ª which¹ they have sinnedª° against¹ it, is known,ª° then the congregationª shall offerª° a youngªª bullockª for the sin,ª and bringª° him beforeª the tabernacleª of the congregation.ª" {Lev 4:13-14} + "When¹ a rulerª hath sinned,ª° and doneª° [somewhat] through ignoranceª [against] any² of¹¹¹ the commandmentsª of the LORDª his Godª [concerning things] which¹ should not¹ be done,ª° and is guilty;ª°" {Lev 4:22} + "And if¹ anyª oneª of the common² peopleª¹¹ sinª° through ignorance,ª while he doethª° [somewhat against] anyª of the commandmentsª¹ of the LORDª [concerning things] which¹ ought not¹ to be done,ª° and be guilty;ª°" {Lev 4:27} + "And the priestª shall make an atonementª° for¹ him as touching¹ his sinª that¹ he hath sinnedª° in oneª¹ of these,¹¹ and it shall be forgivenª° him: and [the remnant] shall be¹ the priest's,ª as a meat offering.ª" {Lev 5:13} + "If¹ a soulª commitª° a trespass,ª and sinª° through ignorance,ª in¹ the holy thingsª of the LORD;ª then he shall bringª°¹ for his trespassª unto the LORDª a ramª without blemishª out of¹ the flocks,ª with thy estimationª by shekelsª of silver,ª after the shekelª of the sanctuary,ª for a trespass offering:ª ... And if¹ a soulª sin,ª° and commitª° anyª of these things¹¹ which¹ are forbidden¹ to be doneª° by the commandmentsª of the LORD;ª though he wistª° [it] not,¹ yet is he guilty,ª° and shall bearª° his iniquity.ª" {Lev 5:15-17} + "Who¹ can understandª° [his] errors?ª cleanseª° thou me from secretª°¹ [faults]." {Psa 19:12} + "Butª he that knewª° not,ª andª did commitª° things worthyª of stripes,ª shall be beatenª° with fewª [stripes]. Forª unto whomsoeverªª muchª is given,ª° ofª himª shall be muchª required:ª° andª to whom¹ men² have committedª° much,ª of himª they will askª° the more.ª" {Lke 12:48} |
