- forasmuch:
- As the Israelites were under the immediate direction of God himself, and were guided by the pillar of cloud and fire, it might be supposed that they had no need of Hobab. But it should be remembered, that the cloud directed only their general journeys, not their particular excursions. Parties took several journeys while the grand army lay still ("And the LORDª spakeª° unto¹ Moses,ª saying,ª°" {Num 13:1} + "Then cameª° the childrenª of Israel,ª [even] the whole¹ congregation,ª into the desertª of Zinª in the firstª month:ª and the peopleª abodeª° in Kadesh;ª and Miriamª diedª° there,¹ and was buriedª° there.¹" {Num 20:1} + "And the LORDª spakeª° unto¹ Moses,ª saying,ª°" {Num 31:1} + "Now the childrenª of Reubenª and the childrenª of Gadª had¹ a veryª greatª multitudeª of cattle:ª and when they sawª°¹ the landª of Jazer,ª and the landª of Gilead,ª that, behold,¹ the placeª [was] a placeª for cattle;ª" {Num 32:1}).
