"And on the east sideª toward the rising² of the sun¹ shall they of the standardª of the campª of Judahª pitchª ° throughout their armies:ª and Nahshonª the sonª of Amminadabª [shall be] captainª of the childrenª of Judah.ª ... All¹ that were numberedª ° in the campª of Judahª [were] an hundredª thousandª and fourscoreª thousandª and sixª thousandª and fourª hundred,ª throughout their armies.ª These shall firstª set forth.ª °" {Num 2:3-9} + "The sonsª of Judahª [were] Erª and Onan:ª and Erª and Onanª diedª ° in the landª of Canaan.ª ... the first place:
The following is the order in which this vast company marched: Issachar, Zebulun, Gershonites, and Merarites, bearing the tabernacle. Simeon, Gad, Kohathites, with the sanctuary. Manasseh, Benjamin, Asher, and Naphtali. Among other things, it should be remarked, that, according to a well-known rule of military tactics, the advanced, and rear-guards, were stronger then the centre.
