"At¹ the commandmentª of the LORDª the childrenª of Israelª journeyed,ª° and at¹ the commandmentª of the LORDª they pitched:ª° as long asª¹¹ the cloudª abodeª° upon¹ the tabernacleª they rested²° in their tents.¹ ... Or¹ [whether it were] two days,ª or¹ a month,ª or¹ a year,ª that the cloudª tarriedª° upon¹ the tabernacle,ª remainingª° thereon,¹ the childrenª of Israelª abode²° in their tents,¹ and journeyedª° not:¹ but when it was taken up,ª° they journeyed.ª°" {Num 9:18-22} + "And the LORDª wentª° beforeª them by dayª in a pillarª of a cloud,ª to leadª° them the way;ª and by nightª in a pillarª of fire,ª to give them light;ª° to go²°¹ by dayª and night:ª ... He took not awayª°¹ the pillarª of the cloudª by day,ª nor the pillarª of fireª by night,ª [from] beforeª the people.ª" {Exd 13:21-22} + "For¹ the cloudª of the LORDª [was] upon¹ the tabernacleª by day,ª and fireª was¹ on it by night,ª in the sightª of all¹ the houseª of Israel,ª throughout all¹ their journeys.ª" {Exd 40:38} + "Who wentª° in the wayª beforeª you, to search you outª° a placeª to pitch your tentsª° [in], in fireª by night,ª to shewª° you by what¹ wayª ye should go,²°¹ and in a cloudª by day.ª" {Deu 1:33} + "Moreover thou leddestª° them in the dayª by a cloudyª pillar;ª and in the nightª by a pillarª of fire,ª to give them lightª° in¹ the wayª wherein¹ they should go.²°¹" {Neh 9:12} + "Yet thou¹ in thy manifoldª merciesª forsookestª° them not¹ in the wilderness:ª¹ the pillarª of the cloudª departedª° not¹ from¹¹ them by day,ª to leadª° them in the way;ª neither the pillarª of fireª by night,ª to shew them light,ª° and the wayª wherein¹ they should go.²°¹" {Neh 9:19} + "In the daytimeª also he ledª° them with a cloud,ª and all¹ the nightª with a lightª of fire.ª" {Psa 78:14} + "He spreadª° a cloudª for a covering;ª and fireª to give lightª° in the night.ª" {Psa 105:39} + "And the LORDª will createª° upon¹ every¹ dwelling placeª of mountª Zion,ª and upon¹ her assemblies,ª a cloudª and smokeª by day,ª and the shiningª of a flamingª fireª by night:ª for¹ upon¹ all¹ the gloryª [shall be] a defence.ª ... And there shall be¹ a tabernacleª for a shadowª in the daytimeª from the heat,ª¹ and for a place of refuge,ª and for a covertª from stormª¹ and from rain.ª¹" {Isa 4:5-6} + "Moreover,ª brethren,ª I wouldª° notª that yeª should be ignorant,ª° how thatª allª ourª fathersª wereª° underª the¹ cloud,ª andª allª passedª° throughª the¹ sea;ª" {1Co 10:1} + "To wit,ª thatª Godª wasª° inª Christ,ª reconcilingª° the worldª unto himself,ª notª imputingª° theirª trespassesª unto them;ª andª hath committedª° untoª usª the¹ wordª of reconciliation.ª" {2Co 5:19} + "Andª I heardª° a greatª voiceª out ofª heavenª saying,ª° Behold,ª° the¹ tabernacleª of Godª [is] withª men,ª andª he will dwellª° withª them,ª andª theyª shall beª° his²¹ people,ª andª Godª himself²¹ shall beª° withª them,ª [and be] their²¹ God.ª" {Rev 21:3}; This cloud not only enlightened the Israelites, but also protected them, and was a continual pledge of God's presence and protection. To this manifestation of the Divine glory, the prophet Isaiah alludes, when he says ("And the LORDª will createª° upon¹ every¹ dwelling placeª of mountª Zion,ª and upon¹ her assemblies,ª a cloudª and smokeª by day,ª and the shiningª of a flamingª fireª by night:ª for¹ upon¹ all¹ the gloryª [shall be] a defence.ª" {Isa 4:5}), "The Lord will create upon every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night." God is the director, protector, and glory of his church. |
