{Numbers 6:2} Speak 1696 z8761 unto x413 the children 1121 of Israel, 3478 and say 559 z8804 unto x413 them, When x3588 either man 376 or x176 woman 802 shall separate 6381 z8686 [themselves] to vow 5087 z8800 a vow 5088 of a Nazarite, 5139 to separate 5144 z8687 [themselves] unto the LORD: 3068
When:
"All¹ the daysª of the vowª of his separationª there shall no¹ razorª comeª° upon¹ his head:ª until¹ the daysª be fulfilled,ª° in the which¹ he separatethª° [himself] unto the LORD,ª he shall be¹ holy,ª [and] shall let the locksª of the hairª of his headª grow.ª° ... All¹ the daysª that he separatethª° [himself] unto the LORDª he shall comeª° at¹ no¹ deadª° body.ª" {Num 6:5-6} + "For wherein¹ shall it be knownª° hereª that¹ I¹ and thy peopleª have foundª° graceª in thy sight?ª [is it] not¹ in that thou goest²°¹ with¹ us? so shall we be separated,ª° I¹ and thy people,ª from all¹¹ the peopleª that¹ [are] upon¹ the faceª of the earth.ª" {Exd 33:16} + "And ye shall be¹ holyª unto me: for¹ I¹ the LORDª [am] holy,ª and have severedª° you from¹ [other] people,ª that ye should be¹ mine." {Lev 20:26} + "Through desireª a man, having separated²° himself,¹ seekethª° [and] intermeddlethª° with all¹ wisdom.ª" {Prv 18:1} + "Paul,ª a servantª of Jesusª Christ,ª calledª [to be] an apostle,ª separatedª° untoª the gospelª of God,ª" {Rom 1:1} + "Andª whatª agreementª hath the templeª of Godª withª idols?ª forª yeª areª° the templeª of the livingª° God;ª asª Godª hath said,ª°² I will dwellª° inª them,ª andª walk inª° [them]; andª I will beª° theirª God,ª andª theyª shall beª° myª people.ª" {2Co 6:16} + "Butª whenª it pleasedª° God,ª who² separatedª° meª fromª myª mother'sª womb,ª andª calledª° [me] byª his²¹ grace,ª" {Gal 1:15} + "Whoª needethªª° notª daily,ªª asª those high priests,ª to offer upª° sacrifice,ª firstª forª his ownª sins,ª and thenª for¹ the¹ people's:ª forª thisª he didª° once,ª when he offered upª° himself.ª" {Hbr 7:27}
separate themselves:
The word yaphli, rendered "shall separate themselves," signifies, "the doing of something extraordinary," and is the same word as is used concerning the making a singular vow. ("Speakª° unto¹ the childrenª of Israel,ª and sayª° unto¹ them, When¹ a manª shall make a singularª° vow,ª the personsª [shall be] for the LORDª by thy estimation.ª" {Lev 27:2}); it seems to convey the idea of a person's acting from extraordinary zeal for God and religion.
to vow:
"Speakª° unto¹ the childrenª of Israel,ª and sayª° unto¹ them, When¹ a manª shall make a singularª° vow,ª the personsª [shall be] for the LORDª by thy estimation.ª" {Lev 27:2} + "For,¹ lo,¹ thou shalt conceive,²¹ and bearª° a son;ª and no¹ razorª shall comeª° on¹ his head:ª for¹ the childª shall be¹ a Nazariteª unto Godª from¹ the womb:ª and he¹ shall beginª° to deliverª°¹ Israelª out of the handª¹ of the Philistines.ª" {Jdg 13:5} + "Therefore also¹ I¹ have lentª° him to the LORD;ª as long¹ as¹ he livethª he¹ shall be¹ lentª° to the LORD.ª And he worshippedª° the LORDª there.¹" {1Sm 1:28} + "And I raised upª° of your sonsª¹ for prophets,ª and of your young menª¹ for Nazarites.ª [Is it] not¹ even¹ thus,¹ O ye childrenª of Israel?ª saithª° the LORD.ª ... But ye gave¹ the Nazaritesª wineª to drink;ª° and commandedª° the prophets,ª saying,ª° Prophesyª° not.¹" {Ams 2:11-12} + "Forª he shall beª° greatª in the sightª of the¹ Lord,ª andª shall drinkª° neitherª wineª norª strong drink;ª andª he shall be filledª° with the Holyª Ghost,ª evenª fromª his²¹ mother'sª womb.ª" {Lke 1:15} + "Doª° thereforeª thisª thatª we sayª° to thee:ª Weª haveª° fourª menª which have²¹ a vow²°¹ onª them;ª ... Themª take,ª° and purify¹ thyself²° withª them,ª andª be at chargesª° withª them,ª thatª they may shaveª° [their] heads:ª andª allª may knowª° that¹ those things,² whereofª they were informedª° concerningª thee,ª areª° nothing;ª butª [that] thou¹ thyself² alsoª walkest orderly,ª° and keepestª° the¹ law.ª" {Act 21:23-24}
to separate themselves:
or, to make themselves Nazarites, Lahazzir, from nazar, to be separate; hence nazir, a Nazarite, i.e., a person separated; one peculiarly devoted to the service of God by being separated from all servile employments. The Nazarites were of two kinds. Such as were devoted to God by their parents in their infancy, or even sometimes before they were born; and such as devoted themselves. The former were Nazarites for life; and the latter commonly bound themselves to observe the laws of the Nazarites for a limited time. The Nazarites for life were not bound to the same strictness as the others, concerning whom the laws relate.
