This was fulfilled during the Babylonish captivity. For, from Saul to the captivity are about 490 years, during which period there were 70 sabbaths of years neglected by the Hebrews. Now the Babylonish captivity lasted 70 years, and during that time the land of Israel rested. "Speakª° unto¹ the childrenª of Israel,ª and sayª° unto¹ them, When¹ ye comeª° into¹ the landª which¹ I¹ giveª° you, then shall the landª keepª° a sabbathª unto the LORD.ª ... But in the seventhª yearª shall be¹ a sabbathª of restª unto the land,ª a sabbathª for the LORD:ª thou shalt neither¹ sowª° thy field,ª nor¹ pruneª° thy vineyard.ª" {Lev 25:2-4} + "And ye shall hallowª°¹ the fiftiethª² year,ª and proclaimª° libertyª throughout [all] the landª unto all¹ the inhabitantsª° thereof: it¹ shall be¹ a jubileª unto you; and ye shall returnª° every manª unto¹ his possession,ª and ye shall returnª° every manª unto¹ his family.ª" {Lev 25:10} + "To fulfilª° the wordª of the LORDª by the mouthª of Jeremiah,ª until¹ the landª had enjoyedª°¹ her sabbaths:ª [for] as long asª¹ she lay desolateª° she kept sabbath,ª° to fulfilª° threescore and tenª years.ª" {2Ch 36:21} |
