- blasphemeth:
- As the word nakav not only signifies to curse, or blaspheme, but also to express, or distinguish by name ("And Mosesª and Aaronª tookª°¹ these¹ men²¹ which¹ are expressedª° by [their] names:ª" {Num 1:17} + "And of the halfª¹ tribeª of Manassehª eighteenªª thousand,ª which¹ were expressedª° by name,ª to comeª° and make David² king.ª°¹¹" {1Ch 12:31} + "And the Gentilesª shall seeª° thy righteousness,ª and all¹ kingsª thy glory:ª and thou shalt be calledª° by a newª name,²°¹ which¹ the mouthª of the LORDª shall name.²¹" {Isa 62:2}), hence the Jews, at a very early period, understood this law as prohibiting them from uttering the name Jehovah, on any other than sacred occasions. The Septuagint, which was made at least 250 years before Christ, renders it Ονομαζων δε το ονομα Κυριου, θανατω θανατουσθω, "Whosoever nameth the name of the Lord, let him die;" from which we see that the Jews at this time were accustomed to pronounce adonay, or Lord, instead of Jehovah; for in place of it the Septuagint always put ο Κυριος. "Thou shalt not¹ takeª°¹ the nameª of the LORDª thy Godª in vain;ª for¹ the LORDª will not¹ hold him guiltlessª°¹ that¹ takethª°¹ his nameª in vain.ª" {Exd 20:7} + "And setª° twoª men,²¹ sonsª of Belial,ª before¹ him, to bear witness²° against¹ him, saying,ª° Thou didst blasphemeª° Godª and the king.ª And [then] carry him out,ª° and stoneª° him, that he may die.ª° ... And there came²° in¹ twoª men,²¹ childrenª of Belial,ª and satª° before¹ him: and the men²¹ of Belialª witnessed²° against¹ him, [even] against¹ Naboth,ª in the presence¹ of the people,ª saying,ª° Nabothª did blasphemeª° Godª and the king.ª Then they carried him forthª° out² of¹¹ the city,ª and stonedª° him with stones,ª that he died.ª°" {1Kg 21:10-13} + "O God,ª how long¹¹ shall the adversaryª reproach?ª° shall the enemyª° blasphemeª° thy nameª for ever?ª" {Psa 74:10} + "Rememberª° this,¹ [that] the enemyª° hath reproached,ª° O LORD,ª and [that] the foolishª peopleª have blasphemedª° thy name.ª" {Psa 74:18} + "For¹ they speakª° against thee wickedly,ª [and] thine enemiesª takeª° [thy name] in vain.ª" {Psa 139:20} + "Whereforeªª I sayª° unto you,ª All manner¹ of² sinª andª blasphemyª shall be forgivenª° unto men:ª butª the¹ blasphemyª [against] the¹ [Holy] Ghostª shall²° notª be forgivenª° unto men.ª" {Mtt 12:31} + "Verilyª I sayª° unto you,ª² Allª sinsª shall be forgivenª° unto the¹ sonsª of men,ª andª blasphemiesª wherewith² soeverª¹ they shall blaspheme:ª° ... Butª heª¹ that² shall blasphemeª° againstª the¹ Holyª Ghostª hathª° never²²² forgiveness,ª¹¹¹ butª isª° in dangerª of eternalª damnation:ª" {Mrk 3:28-29} + "Jesusª saidª° unto them,ª Verily,ª verily,ª I sayª° unto you,ª Beforeª Abrahamª was,ª° Iª am.ª° ... Thenª took they upª° stonesª to²¹ castª° atª him:ª butª Jesusª hid¹ himself,²° andª wentª° out ofª the¹ temple,ª goingª° throughª the midstª of them,ª andª soª passed by.ª°" {Jhn 8:58-59} + "The¹ Jewsª answeredª° him,ª saying,ª° Forª a goodª workª we stoneª° theeª not;ª butª forª blasphemy;ª andª becauseª that thou,ª beingª° a man,ª makestª° thyselfª God.ª ... Sayª° yeª of him, whomª the¹ Fatherª hath sanctified,ª° andª sentª° intoª the¹ world,ª² Thou blasphemest;ª° becauseª I said,²°¹ I amª° the Sonª of God?ª" {Jhn 10:33-36} + "Andª I punishedª° themª oftª in² everyª¹ synagogue,ª and compelledª° [them] to blaspheme;ª° andª being²° exceedingly² mad againstª°¹ them,ª I persecutedª° [them] evenª¹ untoª² strangeª cities.ª" {Act 26:11} + "Who² wasª° beforeª a blasphemer,ª andª a persecutor,ª andª injurious:ª butª I obtained mercy,ª° becauseª I didª° [it] ignorantlyª° inª unbelief.ª" {1Tm 1:13} + "Do²° notª theyª blasphemeª° that worthyª nameª by² the which¹¹ yeª are called?ª°" {Jms 2:7}
