- holy linen coat:
- Heb. of holiness, Greek, a sanctified linen coat, This and the other vestures were peculiar for this day, and for the services of this day; that is, for making atonement: the other service, which was ordinary, he performed this day in his other priestly garments. The eight ornaments usually worn by the high priest are enumerated in "And these¹ [are] the garmentsª which¹ they shall make;ª° a breastplate,ª and an ephod,ª and a robe,ª and a broideredª coat,ª a mitre,ª and a girdle:ª and they shall makeª° holyª garmentsª for Aaronª thy brother,ª and his sons,ª that he may minister unto me in the priest's office.ª°" {Exd 28:4}, etc., and the four that were for this day are here expressed, and are called the white garments, while the others were designated the golden garments, because some were made with gold thread woven in them. These four were made of six double twisted threads, and of flax only. "And the priestª shall put²° on¹ his linenª garment,ª and his linenª breechesª shall he putª° upon¹ his flesh,ª and take upª°¹ the ashesª which¹ the fireª hath consumedª° with¹ the burnt offeringª on¹ the altar,ª and he shall putª° them besideª the altar.ª" {Lev 6:10} + "And thou shalt makeª° holyª garmentsª for Aaronª thy brotherª for gloryª and for beauty.ª" {Exd 28:2} + "And thou shalt embroiderª° the coatª of fine linen,ª and thou shalt makeª° the mitreª [of] fine linen,ª and thou shalt makeª° the girdleª [of] needlework.ªª° ... And they shall be¹ upon¹ Aaron,ª and upon¹ his sons,ª when they come²° in¹ unto¹ the tabernacleª of the congregation,ª or¹ when they come nearª° unto¹ the altarª to ministerª° in the holyª [place]; that they bearª° not¹ iniquity,ª and die:ª° [it shall be] a statuteª for everª unto him and his seedª afterª him." {Exd 28:39-43} + "And they madeª°¹ coatsª [of] fine linenª [of] wovenª° workª for Aaron,ª and for his sons,ª ... And a girdleª [of] fine twined²° linen,ª¹ and blue,ª and purple,ª and scarlet,ªª [of] needlework;ªª° as¹ the LORDª commandedª°¹ Moses.ª" {Exd 39:27-29} + "For he shall grow upª° beforeª him as a tender plant,ª and as a rootª out of a dryª ground:ª¹ he hath no¹ formª nor¹ comeliness;ª and when we shall seeª° him, [there is] no¹ beautyª that we should desireª° him." {Isa 53:2} + "And it shall come to pass,¹ [that] when they enter²° in¹ at¹ the gatesª of the innerª court,ª they shall be clothed²° with¹ linenª garments;ª and no¹ woolª shall comeª° upon¹ them, whiles they ministerª° in the gatesª of the innerª court,ª and within.ª ... They shall have¹ linenª bonnetsª upon¹ their heads,ª and shall have¹ linenª breechesª upon¹ their loins;ª they shall not¹ girdª° [themselves] with any thing that causeth sweat.ª" {Ezk 44:17-18} + "Andª the¹ angelª answeredª° and saidª° unto her,ª The Holyª Ghostª shall comeª° uponª thee,ª andª the powerª of the Highestª shall overshadowª° thee:ª thereforeª alsoª that holy thingª which shall be bornª° ofª theeª shall be calledª° the Sonª of God.ª" {Lke 1:35} + "Butª made²° himself² of no reputation,ª°¹ and took¹ upon him²° the formª of a servant,ª and was madeª° inª the likenessª of men:ª" {Php 2:7} + "Forasmuchª thenª as the¹ childrenª are partakersª° of fleshª andª blood,ª he²°¹ alsoª himself² likewiseª took partª° of the¹ same;ª thatª throughª deathª he might destroyª° him that hadª° the¹ powerª of death,ª that is,ª° the¹ devil;ª" {Hbr 2:14} + "Forª suchª an high priestª becameª° us,ª [who is] holy,ª harmless,ª undefiled,ª separateª° fromª sinners,ª andª madeª° higher¹ than² the¹ heavens;ª" {Hbr 7:26}
