- "Ye shall keepª°¹ my sabbaths,ª and reverenceª° my sanctuary:ª I¹ [am] the LORD.ª" {Lev 19:30} + "Only¹ he shall not¹ go inª° unto¹ the vail,ª nor¹ come nighª° unto¹ the altar,ª because¹ he hath a blemish;ª that he profaneª° not¹¹ my sanctuaries:ª for¹ I¹ the LORDª do sanctifyª° them." {Lev 21:23} + "Both maleª¹ and¹ femaleª shall ye put out,ª° withoutª¹¹ the campª shall ye putª° them; that they defileª° not¹¹ their camps,ª in the midstª whereofª I¹ dwell.ª°" {Num 5:3} + "Whosoever¹ touchethª° the deadª° bodyª of any manª that¹ is dead,ª° and purifieth²° not himself,¹¹ defilethª°¹ the tabernacleª of the LORD;ª and that¹ soulª shall be cut offª° from Israel:ª¹ because¹ the waterª of separationª was not¹ sprinkledª° upon¹ him, he shall be¹ unclean;ª his uncleannessª [is] yet¹ upon him." {Num 19:13} + "But the manª that¹ shall be unclean,ª° and shall not¹ purify²° himself,¹ that¹ soulª shall be cut offª° from amongª¹ the congregation,ª because¹ he hath defiledª°¹ the sanctuaryª of the LORD:ª the waterª of separationª hath not¹ been sprinkledª° upon¹ him; he¹ [is] unclean.ª" {Num 19:20} + "Wherefore,¹ [as] I¹ live,ª saithª° the Lordª GOD;ª Surely,¹¹ because¹ thou hast defiledª°¹ my sanctuaryª with all¹ thy detestable things,ª and with all¹ thine abominations,ª therefore¹ will I¹ also diminishª° [thee]; neither¹ shall mine eyeª spare,ª° neither¹ will I¹ have any pity.ª°" {Ezk 5:11} + "Moreover¹ this¹ they have doneª° unto me: they have defiledª°¹ my sanctuaryª in the same¹ day,ª and have profanedª° my sabbaths.ª" {Ezk 23:38} + "And the LORDª saidª° unto¹ me, Sonª of man,ª mark²° well,ª¹ and beholdª° with thine eyes,ª and hearª° with thine earsª¹ all¹ that¹ I¹ sayª° unto thee concerning all¹ the ordinancesª of the houseª of the LORD,ª and all¹ the lawsª thereof; and mark²° wellª¹ the entering inª of the house,ª with every¹ going forthª of the sanctuary.ª ... In that ye have broughtª° [into my sanctuary] strangers,ªª uncircumcisedª in heart,ª and uncircumcisedª in flesh,ª to be¹ in my sanctuary,ª to polluteª° it, [even]¹ my house,ª when ye offerª°¹ my bread,ª the fatª and the blood,ª and they have brokenª°¹ my covenantª because² of¹ all¹ your abominations.ª" {Ezk 44:5-7} + "And he shall confirmª° the covenantª with manyª for oneª week:ª and in the midstª of the weekª he shall cause the sacrificeª and the oblationª to cease,ª° and for¹ the overspreadingª of abominationsª he shall make [it] desolate,ª° even until¹ the consummation,ª and that determinedª° shall be pouredª° upon¹ the desolate.²°¹" {Dan 9:27} + "If any manª defileª° the¹ templeª of God,ª himª shall²° Godª destroy;ª° forª the¹ templeª of Godª isª° holy,ª whichª [temple] yeª are.ª°" {1Co 3:17}; These laws were principally intended to impress the minds of the Israelites with reverence for the sanctuary; and, on the one hand, to shew them what need they had of circumspection, and purity of heart and life, in order to worship the holy God with acceptance; and, on the other hand, that being sinners in a world full of temptations and defilements, they would continually need forgiveness, through the great atonement typified by all the sacrifices, and the sanctification of the Spirit, showed forth by all the purifications. While they were encamped in the desert, it would not be very burdensome to bring the prescribed oblations; but after they were settled in Canaan, many of them at a great distance from the tabernacle, this would become much more difficult. We may, however, observe, continues Mr. Scott, that many of the cases stated only required such washings as might any where be performed, and that those, respecting which sacrifices were appointed, would more rarely occur. We may also suppose, that provided these were brought, when the person who had been unclean first came to the sanctuary, it would suffice: though distance or other hindrances prevented its being done immediately, at the expiration of the seven days.
