- the plague of leprosy:
- Tzaraâth, the Leprosy, from the Greek λεπρα, from λεπις, a scale; so called, because in this disease the body is covered with thin white scales, so as to give it the appearance of snow. The leprosy is a dreadful, contagious disorder, common in Egypt and Syria, and generally manifests itself at first in the manner described in the text. Its commencement is imperceptible; there appearing only a few reddish spots on the skin, which are not attended with pain or any other symptom, but cannot be removed. It increases imperceptibly, and continues for some years to be more and more manifest. The spots become larger, spread over the whole skin, and are sometimes rather raised, though generally flat. When it increases the upper part of the nose swells, the nostrils distend, the nose becomes soft, swellings appear on the under jaws, the eyebrows are elevated, the ears grow thick, the ends of the fingers, feet, and toes, swell, the nails grow scaly, the joints of the hands and feet separate, the palms of hands and soles of the feet are ulcerated, and in its last stage the patient becomes horrible, and falls to pieces. "And the priestª shall go forthª° out² of¹¹¹ the camp;ª and the priestª shall look,ª° and, behold,¹ [if] the plagueª of leprosyª be healedª° in¹ the leper;ª°" {Lev 14:3} + "And he that owneth¹ the houseª shall comeª° and tellª° the priest,ª saying,ª° It seemethª° to me [there is] as it were a plagueª in the house:ª" {Lev 14:35} + "And the LORDª saidª° furthermoreª unto him, Putª° now¹ thine handª into thy bosom.ª And he putª° his handª into his bosom:ª and when he took²° it out,¹ behold,¹ his handª [was] leprousª° as snow.ª ... And he said,ª° Putª° thine handª into¹ thy bosomª again.²° And he putª° his handª into¹ his bosomª again;²° and plucked²° it out¹ of his bosom,ª¹ and, behold,¹ it was turned againª° as his [other] flesh.ª" {Exd 4:6-7} + "And the cloudª departedª° from off¹¹ the tabernacle;ª and, behold,¹ Miriamª [became] leprous,ª° [white] as snow:ª and Aaronª lookedª° upon¹ Miriam,ª and, behold,¹ [she was] leprous.ª°" {Num 12:10} + "Let¹ her not¹ be¹ as one dead,ª²° of whom¹ the fleshª is halfª consumedª° when he cometh outª° of his mother'sª womb.ª¹" {Num 12:12} + "Let it restª° on¹ the headª of Joab,ª and on¹ all¹ his father'sª house;ª and let there not¹ failª° from the houseª¹ of Joabª one that hath an issue,ª° or that is a leper,ª° or that leanethª° on a staff,ª or that fallethª° on the sword,ª or that lackethª bread.ª" {2Sm 3:29} + "Now Naaman,ª captainª of the hostª of the kingª of Syria,ª was¹ a greatª manª withª his master,ª and honourable,ª°¹ because¹ by him the LORDª had givenª° deliveranceª unto Syria:ª he was¹ also a mightyª manª in valour,ª [but he was] a leper.ª°" {2Kg 5:1} + "The leprosyª therefore of Naamanª shall cleaveª° unto thee, and unto thy seedª for ever.ª And he went outª° from his presenceª¹ a leperª° [as white] as snow.ª" {2Kg 5:27} + "Then Uzziahª was wroth,ª° and [had] a censerª in his handª to burn incense:ª° and while he was wrothª° with¹ the priests,ª the leprosyª even rose upª° in his foreheadª beforeª the priestsª in the houseª of the LORD,ª from beside¹¹ the incenseª altar.ª ... And Uzziahª the kingª was¹ a leperª° unto¹ the dayª of his death,ª and dwelt¹ in²° a severalª° house,ª [being] a leper;ª° for¹ he was cut offª° from the houseª¹ of the LORD:ª and Jothamª his sonª [was] over¹ the king'sª house,ª judgingª°¹ the peopleª of the land.ª" {2Ch 26:19-21} + "From the soleª¹ of the footª even unto¹ the headª [there is] no¹ soundnessª in it; [but] wounds,ª and bruises,ª and putrifyingª sores:ª they have not¹ been closed,ª° neither¹ bound up,ª° neither¹ mollifiedª° with ointment.ª" {Isa 1:6}
