the eagle:
In Hebrew, nesher, Chaldee, neshar, Syriac, neshro, and Arabic, nishr, the eagle, one of the largest, strongest, swiftest, fiercest, and most rapacious of the feathered race. His eye is large, dark, and piercing; his beak powerful and hooked; his legs strong and feathered; his feet yellow and armed with four very long and terrific claws; his wings very large and powerful; his body compact and robust; his bones hard; his flesh firm; his feathers coarse; his attitude fierce and erect; his motions lively; his flight extremely rapid and towering; and his cry the terror of every wing. "But these¹ [are they] of which¹ ye shall not¹ eat:ª° the eagle,ª and the ossifrage,ª and the ospray,ª ... [But of] all¹ cleanª fowlsª ye may eat.ª°" {Deu 14:12-20} + "[There is] a pathª which no¹ fowlª knoweth,ª° and which the vulture'sª eyeª hath not¹ seen:ª°" {Job 28:7} + "Who¹ providethª° for the ravenª his food?ª when¹ his young onesª cryª° unto¹ God,ª they wanderª° for lackª of meat.ª" {Job 38:41} + "Doth the eagleª mount upª° at¹ thy command,ª and make²° her nest² on high?ª°¹ ... Her young onesª also suck upª° blood:ª and where¹ the slainª [are], there¹ [is] she.ª" {Job 39:27-30} + "Behold,¹ he shall come upª° as clouds,ª and his chariotsª [shall be] as a whirlwind:ª his horsesª are swifterª° than eagles.ª¹ Woeª unto us! for¹ we are spoiled.ª°" {Jer 4:13} + "For¹ my peopleª [is] foolish,ª they have not¹ knownª° me; they¹ [are] sottishª children,ª and they¹ have none¹ understanding:ª° they¹ [are] wiseª to do evil,ª° but to do goodª° they have no¹ knowledge.ª°" {Jer 4:22} + "For¹ thus¹ saithª° the LORD;ª Behold,¹ he shall flyª° as an eagle,ª and shall spreadª° his wingsª over¹ Moab.ª" {Jer 48:40} + "Our persecutorsª° are¹ swifterª than the eaglesª¹ of the heaven:ª they pursuedª° us upon¹ the mountains,ª they laid waitª° for us in the wilderness.ª" {Lam 4:19} + "[Set] the trumpetª to¹ thy mouth.ª [He shall come] as an eagleª against¹ the houseª of the LORD,ª because¹ they have transgressedª° my covenant,ª and trespassedª° against¹ my law.ª" {Hsa 8:1} + "Their horsesª also are swifterª° than the leopards,ª¹ and are more fierceª° than the eveningª wolves:ª¹ and their horsemenª shall spreadª° themselves, and their horsemenª shall comeª° from far;ª¹ they shall flyª° as the eagleª [that] hastethª° to eat.ª°" {Hab 1:8} + "Forª wheresoeverªª the¹ carcaseª is,ª° thereª will²° the¹ eaglesª be gathered together.ª°" {Mtt 24:28} + "Andª even asª they did²° notª likeª° to retainª° Godª inª [their] knowledge,ª Godª gave²° them² overª°¹ toª a reprobateª mind,ª to doª° those things which are²° not² convenient;ª°¹ ... Whoª knowingª° the¹ judgmentª of God,ª thatª they which commitª° such thingsª areª° worthyª of death,ª notª onlyª doª° the same,ª butªª have pleasureª° in them that doª° them." {Rom 1:28-32} + "Their²¹ throatª [is] an openª° sepulchre;ª with their²¹ tonguesª they have used deceit;ª° the poisonª of aspsª [is] underª their²¹ lips:ª ... Andª the wayª of peaceª have²° they notª known:ª°" {Rom 3:13-17} + "Forª we¹ ourselves² alsoª wereª°²° sometimesª foolish,ª disobedient,ª deceived,ª° servingª° diversª lustsª andª pleasures,ª livingª° inª maliceª andª envy,ª hateful,ª [and] hatingª° one another.ª" {Tts 3:3}
the ossifrage:
Peres, from paras to break, probably the species of eagle anciently called ossifraga or bone-breaker (from os, a bone, and frango, to break), because it not only strips off the flesh, but breaks the bone, in order to extract the marrow.
the ospray:
Hebrew ozniyah, Arabic azan, and Chaldee azyah, (from azaz, to be strong), a species of eagle, probably the black eagle, so remarkable for its strength.
