they died:

"These¹ [are] the namesª of the sonsª of Aaron,ª the priestsª which were anointed,ª° whom¹ he consecratedªª° to minister in the priest's office.ª° ... And Nadabª and Abihuª diedª° beforeª the LORD,ª when they offeredª° strangeª° fireª beforeª the LORD,ª in the wildernessª of Sinai,ª and they had¹ no¹ children:ª and Eleazarª and Ithamarª ministered in the priest's officeª° in¹ the sightª of Aaronª their father.ª" {Num 3:3-4} + "And the earthª openedª°¹ her mouth,ª and swallowed them up,ª°¹ and their houses,ª and all¹ the menª that¹ [appertained] unto Korah,ª and all¹ [their] goods.ª ... - They died.
- The wages of sin is death.
- They died suddenly.
- They died before the Lord; that is, before the vail that covered the mercy-seat.
- They died by fire, as by fire they sinned.
The fire did not burn them to ashes, as it had done the sacrifices, nor so much as singe their coats ("So they went near,ª° and carriedª° them in their coatsª out² of¹¹¹ the camp;ª as¹ Mosesª had said.ª°" {Lev 10:5}) but struck them dead in an instant. By these different effects of the same fire, we learn that it was no common fire, but kindled by the breath of the Almighty. "For¹ Tophetª [is] ordainedª° of old;ª¹ yea,¹ for the kingª it¹ is prepared;ª° he hath made [it] deepª° [and] large:ª° the pileª thereof [is] fireª and muchª° wood;ª the breathª of the LORD,ª like a streamª of brimstone,ª doth kindleª° it." {Isa 30:33}
