- the altar:
- This altar consisted of four boards of shittim (acacia) wood, covered with brass, and hollow in the middle; but it is supposed to have been filled up with earth when used, for it is expressly said ("An altarª of earthª thou shalt makeª° unto me, and shalt sacrificeª° thereon¹¹ thy burnt offerings,ª and thy peace offerings,ª¹ thy sheep,ª and thine oxen:ª in all¹ placesª where¹ I recordª°¹ my nameª I will comeª° unto¹ thee, and I will blessª° thee." {Exd 20:24}) that the altar is to be of earth. As it was five cubits long and five cubits broad, and three cubits high, if the cubit be reckoned at 21 inches, it must have been eight feet nine inches square, and about five feet three inches in height. "And thou shalt makeª°¹ an altarª [of] shittimª wood,ª fiveª cubitsª long,ª and fiveª cubitsª broad;ª the altarª shall be¹ foursquare:ª° and the heightª thereof [shall be] threeª cubits.ª ... Hollowª° with boardsª shalt thou makeª° it: as¹ it was shewedª° thee in the mount,ª so¹ shall they makeª° [it]." {Exd 27:1-8} + "And thou shalt setª°¹ the altarª of the burnt offeringª beforeª the doorª of the tabernacleª of the tentª of the congregation.ª" {Exd 40:6} + "And he putª° the altarª of burnt offeringª [by] the doorª of the tabernacleª of the tentª of the congregation,ª and offeredª° upon¹ it¹ the burnt offeringª and the meat offering;ª as¹ the LORDª commandedª°¹ Moses.ª" {Exd 40:29} + "Moreover he madeª° an altarª of brass,ª twentyª cubitsª the lengthª thereof, and twentyª cubitsª the breadthª thereof, and tenª cubitsª the heightª thereof." {2Ch 4:1} + "And these¹ [are] the measuresª of the altarª after the cubits:ª The cubitª [is] a cubitª and an hand breadth;ª even the bottomª [shall be] a cubit,ª and the breadthª a cubit,ª and the borderª thereof by¹ the edgeª thereof round aboutª [shall be] aª span:ª and this¹ [shall be] the higher placeª of the altar.ª ... And the settleª [shall be] fourteenªª [cubits] longª and fourteenªª broadª in¹ the fourª squaresª thereof; and the borderª aboutª it [shall be] halfª a cubit;ª and the bottomª thereof [shall be] a cubitª about;ª and his stairsª shall lookª° toward the east.ª" {Ezk 43:13-17} + "Forª what the¹ lawª could not do,ª inª thatª it was weakª° throughª the¹ flesh,ª Godª sendingª° his ownª Sonª inª the likenessª of sinfulª flesh,ª andª forª sin,ª condemnedª° sinª inª the¹ flesh:ª ... Thatª the¹ righteousnessª of the¹ lawª might be fulfilledª° inª us,ª who walkª° notª afterª the flesh,ª butª afterª the Spirit.ª" {Rom 8:3-4} + "I beseechª° youª therefore,ª brethren,ª byª the¹ merciesª of God,ª that ye presentª° yourª bodiesª a livingª° sacrifice,ª holy,ª acceptableª unto God,ª [which is] yourª reasonableª service.ª" {Rom 12:1} + "Wherefore,ª holyª brethren,ª partakersª of the heavenlyª calling,ª considerª° the¹ Apostleª andª High Priestª of ourª profession,ª Christª Jesus;ª" {Hbr 3:1} + "How much²¹ moreª shall²° the¹ bloodª of Christ,ª whoª throughª the eternalª Spiritª offeredª° himselfª without spotª to God,ª purgeª° yourª conscienceª fromª deadª worksª to² serveª° the livingª° God?ª" {Hbr 9:14} + "We haveª° an altar,ª whereofªª they haveª° noª rightª to eatª° which serveª° the¹ tabernacle.ª" {Hbr 13:10} + "Yeª also,ª asª livelyª° stones,ª are built upª° a spiritualª house,ª an holyª priesthood,ª to offer upª° spiritualª sacrifices,ª acceptableª to Godª byª Jesusª Christ.ª" {1Pe 2:5}
