pure oil olive beaten:
That is, such oil as could be easily expressed from the olives, after they had been bruised in a mortar; and which is much purer than that obtained after the olives are put under the press. "¹ The pureª candlestick,ª [with]¹ the lampsª thereof, [even with] the lampsª to be set in order,ª and all¹ the vesselsª thereof, and the oilª for light,ª" {Exd 39:37} + "Commandª °¹ the childrenª of Israel,ª that they bringª ° unto¹ thee pureª oilª oliveª beatenª for the light,ª to cause the lampsª to burnª ° continually.ª ... for the light:
"And thou shalt makeª ° a candlestickª [of] pureª gold:ª [of] beaten workª shall the candlestickª be made:ª ° his shaft,ª and his branches,ª his bowls,ª his knops,ª and his flowers,ª shall be¹ of¹ the same. ... And thou shalt makeª ° the¹ sevenª lampsª thereof: and they shall lightª °¹ the lampsª thereof, that they may give lightª ° over againstª ¹ ¹ it.²" {Exd 25:31-37}

to cause the lamp:
Josephus says, that the whole of the seven lamps burned all night; and that in the morning four were extinguished, and three burned the whole of the day. Such might have been the practice in his time; but it appears sufficiently evident from "And when Aaronª lightethª °¹ the lampsª at¹ even,ª he shall burn incenseª ° upon it, a perpetualª incenseª beforeª the LORDª throughout your generations.ª" {Exd 30:8}, and "And ere¹ the lampª of Godª went outª ° in the templeª of the LORD,ª where¹ ¹ the arkª of Godª [was], and Samuelª was laid downª ° [to sleep];" {1Sm 3:3}, that they were anciently extinguished in the morning.
