- the tabernacle with ten curtains:
- The word mishcan, from shachan, to dwell, means simply a dwelling-place, or habitation. "When God had brought the children of Israel out of Egypt," says the very learned Dr. Cudworth, "resolving to manifest himself in a peculiar manner present among them, he thought good to dwell amongst them in a visible and external manner; and therefore, while they were in the wilderness, and sojourned in tents, he would have a tent or tabernacle built, to sojourn with them also. - Now, the tabernacle being thus a house for God to dwell in visibly, to make up the notion of dwelling or habitation complete, there must be all things suitable to a house belonging to it. Hence, in the holy place, there must be a table and a candlestick, because these were the ordinary furniture of a room. The table must have its dishes, and spoons, and bowls, and covers, belonging to it, though they were never used; and always be furnished with bread upon it. The candlestick must have its lamps continually burning, etc." "And let them makeª° me a sanctuary;ª that I may dwellª° amongª them." {Exd 25:8} + "And every¹ wiseª hearted¹ man² among them that wroughtª° the workª of¹ the tabernacleª madeª° tenª curtainsª [of] fine twined²° linen,ª¹ and blue,ª and purple,ª and scarlet:ªª [with] cherubimsª of cunningª° workª madeª° he them. ... And he madeª° a coveringª for the tentª [of] rams'ª skinsª dyed red,ª° and a coveringª [of] badgers'ª skinsª aboveª¹ [that]." {Exd 36:8-19} + "On the first² dayª¹¹ of the first²¹ monthª shalt thou set upª°¹ the tabernacleª of the tentª of the congregation.ª" {Exd 40:2} + "And it came to pass¹ in the firstª monthª in the secondª year,ª on the firstª [day] of the month,ª [that] the tabernacleª was reared up.ª° ... And he spread abroadª°¹ the tentª over¹ the tabernacle,ª and putª°¹ the coveringª of the tentª aboveª¹ upon¹ it; as¹ the LORDª commandedª°¹ Moses.ª" {Exd 40:17-19} + "Now it came to pass,¹ as¹ Davidª satª° in his house,ª that Davidª saidª° to¹ Nathanª the prophet,ª Lo,¹ I¹ dwellª° in an houseª of cedars,ª but the arkª of the covenantª of the LORDª [remaineth] under¹ curtains.ª" {1Ch 17:1} + "For the tabernacleª of the LORD,ª which¹ Mosesª madeª° in the wilderness,ª and the altarª of the burnt offering,ª [were] at that¹ seasonª in the high placeª at Gibeon.ª" {1Ch 21:29} + "Andª the¹ Wordª was madeª° flesh,ª andª dweltª° amongª us,ª (andª we beheldª° hisª glory,ª the gloryª asª of the only begottenª ofª the Father,)ª fullª of graceª andª truth.ª" {Jhn 1:14} + "Butª heª spakeª° ofª the¹ templeª of his²¹ body.ª" {Jhn 2:21} + "A ministerª of the¹ sanctuary,ª andª of the¹ trueª tabernacle,ª whichª the¹ Lordª pitched,ª° andª notª man.ª" {Hbr 8:2} + "Whichª [was] a figureª forª the¹ timeª then present,ª° inª whichª were offeredª° bothª giftsª andª sacrifices,ª that couldª° notª make²° him that did the service²° perfect,ª°¹¹ as pertaining¹ to² the conscience;ª" {Hbr 9:9} + "[It was] thereforeª necessaryª that the¹¹ patterns²¹ of things²¹ inª the¹ heavensª should be purifiedª° with these;ª butª the¹ heavenly thingsª themselvesª with betterª sacrificesª thanª these.ª ... Forª Christª is²° notª enteredª° intoª the holy placesª made with hands,ª [which are] the figuresª of the¹ true;ª butª intoª heavenª itself,ª nowª to appearª° in the¹ presenceª of Godª forª us:ª" {Hbr 9:23-24} + "Andª I heardª° a greatª voiceª out ofª heavenª saying,ª° Behold,ª° the¹ tabernacleª of Godª [is] withª men,ª andª he will dwellª° withª them,ª andª theyª shall beª° his²¹ people,ª andª Godª himself²¹ shall beª° withª them,ª [and be] their²¹ God.ª" {Rev 21:3}
