- he shall:
- There is a smaller compensation required in other things ("For¹ all¹ mannerª of trespass,ª [whether it be] for¹ ox,ª for¹ ass,ª for¹ sheep,ª for¹ raiment,ª [or] for¹ any manner¹ of lost thing,ª which¹ [another] challengethª° to be his,¹¹¹ the causeª of both partiesª shall comeª° before¹ the judges;ª [and] whom¹ the judgesª shall condemn,ª° he shall payª° doubleª unto his neighbour.ª" {Exd 22:9}), and also a disproportion between an ox and a sheep. The reason of the former is, as Maimonides explains it, because money, goods, etc., are better guarded in houses and cities, than cattle in a field; which consequently can be more easily stolen. The reason of the latter seems to be, as it is explained by Bishop Patrick, that an ox was of greater value, and more useful for the purposes of husbandry. "And the LORDª spakeª° unto¹ Moses,ª saying,ª° ... And he shall bringª° his trespass offeringª unto the LORD,ª a ramª without blemishª out of¹ the flock,ª with thy estimation,ª for a trespass offering,ª unto¹ the priest:ª" {Lev 6:1-6} + "Then they shall confessª°¹ their sinª which¹ they have done:ª° and he shall recompenseª° his¹ trespassª with the principalª thereof, and addª° unto¹ it the fifthª [part] thereof, and giveª° [it] unto [him] against whom¹ he hath trespassed.ª°" {Num 5:7} + "And he shall restoreª° the lambª fourfold,ª becauseª¹ he didª°¹ this¹ thing,ª and becauseª¹ he had no¹ pity.ª°" {2Sm 12:6} + "But [if] he be found,ª° he shall restoreª° sevenfold;ª he shall giveª°¹ all¹ the substanceª of his house.ª" {Prv 6:31} + "Andª Zacchaeusª stood,ª° and saidª° untoª the¹ Lord;ª Behold,ª° Lord,ª the¹ halfª of myª goodsª° I giveª° to the¹ poor;ª andª if²°¹ I have taken²° any thing² from any man² by false accusation,ªª° I restoreª° [him] fourfold.ª" {Lke 19:8}
