To smite either father or mother, in a manner which indicated either contempt or malice, or left marks of violence, was deemed a proof of so ungrateful and unnatural a disposition, that no provocation was admitted as an excuse, but the offence was made capital. Nay, he who cursed his father or mother, who uttered imprecations, ill wishes, or revilings, against a parent, was included in the same sense; though few crimes were made capital by the law of Moses. The law of God, as delegated to parents is honoured when they are honoured, and despised when they are despised, and to rebel against the lawful exercise of this authority is rebellion against God. - Rev. T. Scott "If¹ a manª have¹ a stubbornª° and rebelliousª° son,ª which will not¹ obeyª° the voiceª of his father,ª or the voiceª of his mother,ª and [that], when they have chastenedª° him, will not¹ hearkenª° unto¹ them: ... And all¹ the men²¹ of his cityª shall stoneª° him with stones,ª that he die:ª° so shalt thou put²° evil² awayª°¹ from amongª¹ you; and all¹ Israelª shall hear,ª° and fear.ª°" {Deu 21:18-21} + "Cursedª° [be] he that smitethª° his neighbourª secretly.ª And all¹ the peopleª shall say,ª° Amen.ª" {Deu 27:24} + "[There is] a generationª [that] cursethª° their father,ª and doth not¹ blessª° their mother.ª" {Prv 30:11} + "The eyeª [that] mockethª° at [his] father,ª and despisethª° to obeyª [his] mother,ª the ravensª of the valleyª shall pick it out,ª° and the youngª eaglesª shall eatª° it." {Prv 30:17} + "Knowingª° this,ª thatª the lawª is²° notª madeª° for a righteous man,ª butª for the lawlessª andª disobedient,ª for the ungodlyª andª for sinners,ª for unholyª andª profane,ª for murderers of fathersª andª murderers of mothers,ª for manslayers,ª" {1Tm 1:9} |
