"But the Egyptiansª pursuedª° afterª them, all¹ the horsesª [and] chariotsª of Pharaoh,ª and his horsemen,ª and his army,ª and overtookª° them encampingª° by¹ the sea,ª beside¹ Pihahiroth,ª beforeª Baalzephon.ª" {Exd 14:9} + "And it came to pass,¹ when Pharaohª had let¹ the peopleª go,ª° that Godª ledª° them not¹ [through] the wayª of the landª of the Philistines,ª althoughª that¹ [was] near;ª for¹ Godª said,ª° Lest peradventure¹ the peopleª repentª° when they seeª° war,ª and they returnª° to Egypt:ª ... Pi-hahiroth:
Pi̇hachiroth, "the mouth of Chiroth," as it is rendered by the LXX. Dr. Shaw is of opinion, that Chiroth denotes the valley which extends from the wilderness of Etham to the Red Sea. "This valley," he observes, "ends at the sea in a small bay made by the eastern extremities of the mountains (of Gewoubee and Attackah, between which the valley lies) which I have been describing, and is called Tiah-Beni-Israel, i.e., the road of the Israelites, by a tradition that is still kept up by the Arabs, of their having passed through it; so it is also called Baideah, from the new and unheard of miracle that was wrought near it, by dividing the Red sea, and destroying therein Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen."
Migdol:
The word Migdol signifies a tower, and hence some have supposed that it was a fortress which served to defend the bay. But the LXX render it Μαγδωλος, Magdolus, which is mentioned by Herodotus, Hecateus, and others, and is expressly said by Stephanus (de Urb.) to be πολις Αιγυπτον, "a city of Egypt." This Bochart conjectures to have been the same as Migdol (see the parallel passages). "The wordª that¹ came¹ to¹ Jeremiahª concerning¹ all¹ the Jewsª which dwellª° in the landª of Egypt,ª which dwellª° at Migdol,ª and at Tahpanhes,ª and at Noph,ª and in the countryª of Pathros,ª saying,ª°" {Jer 44:1} + "Declareª° ye in Egypt,ª and publishª° in Migdol,ª and publishª° in Nophª and in Tahpanhes:ª sayª° ye, Stand fast,ª° and prepareª° thee; for¹ the swordª shall devourª° round aboutª thee." {Jer 46:14} + "Behold,¹ therefore¹ I [am] against¹ thee, and against¹ thy rivers,ª and I will makeª°¹ the landª of Egyptª utterly² wasteª¹ [and] desolate,ª from the towerª¹ of Syeneª even unto¹ the borderª of Ethiopia.ª" {Ezk 29:10}, Heb
Baalzephon:
This may have been the name of a town or city in which Baal was worshipped; and probably called zephon, from being situated on the north point of the Red sea, near the present Suez.
