- a sign:
- This expression, says Michaelis, alludes to the custom of the Orientals, of burning in their right hand all kinds of marks with the ashes of henna, which gives an indelible colour; and this is done even to this day. They were likewise accustomed to write all kinds of sayings, and frequently superstitious words, on slips or pieces of linen, which they wore as ornaments on their foreheads. "And it shall be¹ for a tokenª upon¹ thine hand,ª and for frontletsª between¹ thine eyes:ª for¹ by strengthª of handª the LORDª brought us forthª° out of Egypt.ª¹" {Exd 13:16} + "And this¹ dayª shall be¹ unto you for a memorial;ª and ye shall keepª° it a feastª to the LORDª throughout your generations;ª ye shall keep it a feastª° by an ordinanceª for ever.ª" {Exd 12:14} + "And it shall be¹ unto you for a fringe,ª that ye may look²° upon¹ it, and rememberª°¹ all¹ the commandmentsª of the LORD,ª and doª° them; and that ye seekª° not¹ afterª your own heartª and your own eyes,ª afterª which¹ ye¹ use to go a whoring:ª°" {Num 15:39} + "And these¹ words,ª which¹ I¹ commandª° thee this day,ª shall be¹ in¹ thine heart:ª" {Deu 6:6} + "And thou shalt bindª° them for a signª upon¹ thine hand,ª and they shall be¹ as frontletsª between¹ thine eyes.ª" {Deu 6:8} + "Therefore shall ye lay upª°¹ these¹ my wordsª in¹ your heartª and in¹ your soul,ª and bindª° them for a signª upon¹ your hand,ª that they may be¹ as frontletsª between¹ your eyes.ª ... And ye shall teachª° them¹ your children,ª speakingª° of them when thou sittestª° in thine house,ª and when thou walkest²°¹ by the way,ª when thou liest²° down,¹ and when thou risest up.ª°" {Deu 11:18-19} + "For¹ they¹ [shall be] an ornamentª of graceª unto thy head,ª and chainsª about thy neck.ª" {Prv 1:9} + "My son,ª let not¹ them departª° from thine eyes:ª¹ keepª° sound wisdomª and discretion:ª" {Prv 3:21} + "My son,ª keepª° thy father'sª commandment,ª and forsakeª° not¹ the lawª of thy mother:ª ... For¹ the commandmentª [is] a lamp;ª and the lawª [is] light;ª and reproofsª of instructionª [are] the wayª of life:ª" {Prv 6:20-23} + "Till¹ a dartª strike²° through¹ his liver;ª as a birdª hastethª° to¹ the snare,ª and knowethª° not¹ that¹ it¹ [is] for his life.ª" {Prv 7:23} + "Setª° me as a sealª upon¹ thine heart,ª as a sealª upon¹ thine arm:ª for¹ loveª [is] strongª as death;ª jealousyª [is] cruelª as the grave:ª the coalsª thereof [are] coalsª of fire,ª [which hath a] most vehement flame.ª" {Sgs 8:6} + "Behold,¹ I have gravenª° thee upon¹ the palms of [my] hands;ª thy wallsª [are] continuallyª before¹ me." {Isa 49:16} + "[As] I¹ live,ª saithª° the LORD,ª though¹¹ Coniahª the sonª of Jehoiakimª kingª of Judahª were¹ the signetª upon¹ my rightª hand,ª yet¹ would I pluckª° thee thence;¹¹" {Jer 22:24} + "Butª allª their²¹ worksª they doª° for² to be seenª° of men:ª² they¹ make broadª° their²¹ phylacteries,ª andª enlargeª° the¹ bordersª of their²¹ garments,ª" {Mtt 23:5}
