- Heb. lift up my hand, The ancient mode of appealing to God was by lifting up the right hand, and was considered as a form of swearing. Hence yamin, in Hebrew the right hand, is in Arabic an oath, and as a verb, to take an oath. A similar custom prevailed among the heathens. See Virg. Æn. 1. xii. v. 196. "And Abramª saidª° to¹ the kingª of Sodom,ª I have lift upª° mine handª unto¹ the LORD,ª the most highª God,ª the possessorª° of heavenª and earth,ª" {Gen 14:22} + "For¹ I lift upª° my handª to¹ heaven,ª and say,ª° I¹ liveª for ever.ª" {Deu 32:40} + "And sayª° unto¹ them, Thus¹ saithª° the Lordª GOD;ª In the dayª when I choseª° Israel,ª and lifted upª° mine handª unto the seedª of the houseª of Jacob,ª and made myself knownª° unto them in the landª of Egypt,ª when I lifted²° up¹ mine handª unto them, saying,ª° I¹ [am] the LORDª your God;ª ... In the dayª [that] I lifted upª° mine handª unto them, to bring them forthª° of the landª¹ of Egyptª into¹ a landª that¹ I had espiedª° for them, flowingª° with milkª and honey,ª which¹ [is] the gloryª of all¹ lands:ª" {Ezk 20:5-6} + "Yet also¹ I¹ lifted upª° my handª unto them in the wilderness,ª that I would not¹ bringª° them into¹ the landª which¹ I had givenª° [them], flowingª° with milkª and honey,ª which¹ [is] the gloryª of all¹ lands;ª" {Ezk 20:15} + "I¹ lifted upª°¹ mine handª unto them also¹ in the wilderness,ª that I would scatterª° them among the heathen,ª and disperseª° them through the countries;ª" {Ezk 20:23} + "[For] when I had broughtª° them into¹ the land,ª [for] the which¹ I lifted upª°¹ mine handª to giveª° it to them, then they sawª° every¹ highª° hill,ª and all¹ the thickª trees,ª and they offeredª° there¹¹ their sacrifices,ª and there¹ they presentedª° the provocationª of their offering:ª there¹ also they madeª° their sweetª savour,ª and poured outª° there¹¹ their drink offerings.ª" {Ezk 20:28} + "And ye shall knowª° that¹ I¹ [am] the LORD,ª when I shall bringª° you into¹ the landª of Israel,ª into¹ the countryª [for] the which¹ I lifted upª°¹ mine handª to giveª° it to your fathers.ª" {Ezk 20:42} + "Therefore¹ thus¹ saithª° the Lordª GOD;ª I¹ have lifted upª°¹ mine hand,ª Surely¹¹ the heathenª that¹ [are] aboutª¹ you, they¹ shall bearª° their shame.ª" {Ezk 36:7} + "And ye shall inheritª° it, oneª as well as another:ª [concerning] the which¹ I lifted upª°¹ mine handª to giveª° it unto your fathers:ª and this¹ landª shall fallª° unto you for inheritance.ª" {Ezk 47:14}
