- he bowed himself:
- Joseph thus shewed that his external greatness did not render him forgetful of the respect due to his father. The Egyptians were remarkable for the reverence paid to old age: "for if a young person meet his senior, he instantly turns aside to make way for him; if an aged person enter an apartment, the youth always rise from their seats;" and Mr. Savary observes, that the same reverence is still paid to old age in Egypt. "And he lift upª° his eyesª and looked,ª° and, lo,¹ threeª men²¹ stoodª° by¹ him: and when he sawª° [them], he ranª° to meetª° them from the tent² door,ª¹¹ and bowed²° himself¹ toward the ground,ª" {Gen 18:2} + "And there cameª° twoª angelsª to Sodomª at even;ª and Lotª satª° in the gateª of Sodom:ª and Lotª seeingª° [them] rose upª° to meetª° them; and he bowed²° himself¹ with his faceª toward the ground;ª" {Gen 19:1} + "And Abrahamª stood up,ª° and bowed²° himself¹ to the peopleª of the land,ª [even] to the childrenª of Heth.ª" {Gen 23:7} + "And he¹ passed overª° before¹ them,² and bowed himselfª° to the groundª sevenª times,ª until¹ he came nearª° to¹ his brother.ª" {Gen 33:3} + "And Josephª [was] the governorª over¹ the land,ª [and] he¹ [it was] that soldª° to all¹ the peopleª of the land:ª and Joseph'sª brethrenª came,ª° and bowed down²° themselves¹ before him [with] their facesª to the earth.ª" {Gen 42:6} + "Honourª°¹ thy fatherª and thy mother:ª that¹ thy daysª may be longª° upon¹ the landª which¹ the LORDª thy Godª givethª° thee." {Exd 20:12} + "And Mosesª made haste,ª° and bowed his headª° toward the earth,ª and worshipped.ª°" {Exd 34:8} + "Ye shall fearª° every manª his mother,ª and his father,ª and keepª° my sabbaths:ª I¹ [am] the LORDª your God.ª" {Lev 19:3} + "Thou shalt rise upª° beforeª¹ the hoary head,ª and honourª° the faceª of the old man,ª and fear²° thy God:ª¹¹ I¹ [am] the LORD.ª" {Lev 19:32} + "Bathshebaª therefore wentª° unto¹ kingª Solomon,ª to speakª° unto him for¹ Adonijah.ª And the kingª rose upª° to meet²°¹ her, and bowed²° himself¹ unto her, and sat downª° on¹ his throne,ª and caused a seatª to be setª° for the king'sª mother;ª and she satª° on his right hand.ª" {1Kg 2:19} + "Then she went in,ª° and fellª° at¹ his feet,ª and bowed²° herself¹ to the ground,ª and took upª°¹ her son,ª and went out.ª°" {2Kg 4:37} + "Her childrenª arise up,ª° and call her blessed;ª° her husbandª [also], and he praisethª° her." {Prv 31:28} + "Children,ª obeyª° yourª parentsª inª the Lord:ª forª thisª isª° right.ª" {Eph 6:1}
