the magicians of Egypt:
The word here used (chartummim) may mean no more than interpreters of abstruse or difficult subjects; especially of dreams and visions, which formed a considerable part of the ancient pagan religion; and the Egyptian priests were the first who professed this art. The word may be of affinity with, or derived from, the Persian chiradmand, wise, learned, judicious, intelligent, from chirad, understanding, judgment, and mand, endowed with. They seem to have been such persons as Josephus calls sacred scribes; or professors of sacred learning. "Then Pharaohª also¹ calledª° the wise menª and the sorcerers:ª° now the magiciansª of Egypt,ª they¹ also¹ didª° in like mannerª with their enchantments.ª" {Exd 7:11} + "And the magiciansª of Egyptª didª° so¹ with their enchantments:ª and Pharaoh'sª heartª was hardened,ª° neither¹ did he hearkenª° unto¹ them; as¹ the LORDª had said.ª°" {Exd 7:22} + "And the magiciansª didª° so¹ with their enchantments,ª and brought upª°¹ frogsª upon¹ the landª of Egypt.ª" {Exd 8:7} + "And the magiciansª didª° so¹ with their enchantmentsª to bring forthª°¹ lice,ª but they couldª° not:¹ so there were¹ liceª upon man,ª and upon beast.ª ... Then the magiciansª saidª° unto¹ Pharaoh,ª This¹ [is] the fingerª of God:ª and Pharaoh'sª heartª was hardened,ª° and he hearkenedª° not¹ unto¹ them; as¹ the LORDª had said.ª°" {Exd 8:18-19} + "And the magiciansª couldª° not¹ standª° beforeª Mosesª because² of¹¹ the boils;ª for¹ the boilª was¹ upon the magicians,ª and upon all¹ the Egyptians.ª" {Exd 9:11} + "Regardª° not¹ them that have familiar spirits,ª neither¹ seekª° after¹ wizards,ª to be defiledª° by them: I¹ [am] the LORDª your God.ª" {Lev 19:31} + "And the soulª that¹ turnethª° afterª such as have familiar spirits,ª and after²¹ wizards,ª to go a whoringª° afterª them, I will even setª°¹ my faceª against that¹ soul,ª and will cut him offª°¹ from amongª¹ his people.ª" {Lev 20:6} + "When¹ thou¹ art comeª° into¹ the landª which¹ the LORDª thy Godª givethª° thee, thou shalt not¹ learnª° to doª° after the abominationsª of those¹ nations.ª ... For¹ these¹ nations,ª which¹ thou¹ shalt possess,ª°¹ hearkenedª° unto¹ observers of times,ª° and unto¹ diviners:ª° but as for thee,¹ the LORDª thy Godª hath not¹ sufferedª° thee so¹ [to do]." {Deu 18:9-14} + "And when¹ they shall sayª° unto¹ you, Seekª° unto¹ them that have familiar spirits,ª and unto¹ wizardsª that peep,ª° and that mutter:ª° should not¹ a peopleª seekª° unto¹ their God?ª for¹ the livingª to¹ the dead?ª°" {Isa 8:19} + "And the spiritª of Egyptª shall failª° in the midstª thereof; and I will destroyª° the counselª thereof: and they shall seekª° to¹ the idols,ª and to¹ the charmers,ª and to¹ them that have familiar spirits,ª and to¹ the wizards.ª" {Isa 19:3} + "Therefore,¹ behold,¹ I will proceedª° to do a marvellous workª° among¹ this¹ people,ª [even] a marvellous workª° and a wonder:ª for the wisdomª of their wiseª [men] shall perish,ª° and the understandingª of their prudentª° [men] shall be hid.ª°" {Isa 29:14} + "Standª° now¹ with thine enchantments,ª and with the multitudeª of thy sorceries,ª whereinª thou hast labouredª° from thy youth;ª¹ if so be¹ thou shalt be ableª° to profit,ª° if so be¹ thou mayest prevail.ª° ... Thou art weariedª° in the multitudeª of thy counsels.ª Let now¹ the astrologers,ªª° the stargazers,ª²¹ the monthlyª prognosticators,ª° stand up,ª° and saveª° thee from [these things] that¹¹ shall comeª° upon¹ thee." {Isa 47:12-13} + "And in all¹ mattersª of wisdomª [and] understanding,ª that¹ the kingª enquiredª° of¹ them, he foundª° them ten¹ times²¹ better² than¹ all¹ the magiciansª [and] astrologersª that¹ [were] in all¹ his realm.ª" {Dan 1:20} + "Then the kingª commandedª° to callª° the magicians,ª and the astrologers,ª and the sorcerers,ª° and the Chaldeans,ª for to shewª° the kingª his dreams.ª So they cameª° and stoodª° beforeª the king.ª" {Dan 2:2} + "Thenª came²° in¹ the magicians,ª the astrologers,ª the Chaldeans,ª and the soothsayers:ª° and Iª toldª° the dreamª beforeª them; but they did notª make knownª° unto me the interpretationª thereof." {Dan 4:7} + "The kingª criedª° aloudª to bring²° in¹ the astrologers,ª the Chaldeans,ª and the soothsayers.ª° [And] the kingª spake,ª° and saidª° to the wiseª [men] of Babylon,ª Whosoeverªª¹ shall readª° thisª writing,ª and shewª° me the interpretationª thereof, shall be clothedª° with scarlet,ª and [have] a chainª of¹ goldª aboutª his neck,ª and shall be the third² rulerª°¹ in the kingdom.ª" {Dan 5:7} + "There isª a manª in thy kingdom,ª in whom¹ [is] the spiritª of the holyª gods;ª and in the daysª of thy fatherª lightª and understandingª and wisdom,ª like the wisdomª of the gods,ª was foundª° in him; whom the kingª Nebuchadnezzarª thy father,ª the king,ª [I say], thy father,ª madeª° masterª of the magicians,ª astrologers,ª Chaldeans,ª [and] soothsayers;ª°" {Dan 5:11} + "Thenª certainª philosophersª of the¹ Epicureans,ª andª of the¹ Stoicks,²¹ encounteredª° him.ª Andª someª said,ª° Whatª willªª° thisª babblerª say?ªª° other¹ some, He seemethª° to beª° a setter forthª of strangeª gods:ª becauseª he preachedª° unto themª Jesus,ª andª the¹ resurrection.ª" {Act 17:18}
