the captain:
"And the Midianitesª soldª ° him into¹ Egyptª unto Potiphar,ª an officerª of Pharaoh's,ª [and] captainª of the guard.ª" {Gen 37:36} + "And Josephª was brought downª ° to Egypt;ª and Potiphar,ª an officerª of Pharaoh,ª captainª of the guard,ª an Egyptian,ª ª boughtª ° him of the handsª ¹ of the Ishmeelites,ª which¹ had brought him downª ° thither.¹" {Gen 39:1} + "But the LORDª was¹ with¹ Joseph,ª and shewedª °¹ him mercy,ª and gaveª ° him favourª in the sightª of the keeperª of the prison.ª ª ... a season:
Yamim, literally days; how long is uncertain, though the word may signify, as many suppose, a complete year (see note on "And in processª ¹ of timeª it came to pass,¹ that Cainª broughtª ° of the fruitª ¹ of the groundª an offeringª unto the LORD.ª" {Gen 4:3} and see note on "And her brotherª and her motherª said,ª ° Let the damselª abideª ° with¹ us [a few] days,ª at the leastª ten;ª after² that¹ she shall go.² °¹" {Gen 24:55}); and as Pharaoh called them to an account on his birthday ("And it came to pass¹ the thirdª day,ª [which was]¹ Pharaoh'sª birthday,ª ª ° that he madeª ° a feastª unto all¹ his servants:ª and he lifted upª °¹ the headª of the chiefª butler² °¹ and of the chiefª bakerª ° amongª his servants.ª" {Gen 40:20}), Calmet supposes they had offended on the preceding birthday, and thus had been one whole year in prison.
