{Genesis 38:1} And it came to pass x1961 at that x1931 time, 6256 that Judah 3063 went down 3381 z8799 from x4480 x854 his brethren, 251 and turned y5186 z8799 in x5186 to x5704 a certain 376 Adullamite, 5726 whose name 8034 [was] Hirah. 2437

As there cannot be above 23 years from the selling of Joseph, unto Israel's going down into Egypt; and as it is impossible that Judah should take a wife, and by her have three sons successively, and Shelah, the youngest, marriageable when Judah begat Pharez of Tamar, and Pharez be grown up, married, and have two sons, all within so short a period; Mr. Ainsworth conceives that the time here spoken of is soon after Jacob's coming to Shechem ("And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids." {Gen 33:1}). We have accordingly adapted the chronology to correspond with that time.
"And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night. ... And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat." {Gen 19:2-3} + "And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him, Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. And when he had turned in unto her into the tent, she covered him with a mantle." {Jdg 4:18} + "And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where [was] a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And [so] it was, [that] as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread." {2Kg 4:8} + "Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding." {Prv 9:6} + "He that walketh with wise [men] shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed." {Prv 13:20}
An inhabitant of Adullam, a city of Canaan, afterwards given to Judah, situated in the southern part of that tribe, west of Hebron. "The king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one;" {Jsh 12:15} + "Jarmuth, and Adullam, Socoh, and Azekah," {Jsh 15:35} + "David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard [it], they went down thither to him." {1Sm 22:1} + "And three of the thirty chief went down, and came to David in the harvest time unto the cave of Adullam: and the troop of the Philistines pitched in the valley of Rephaim." {2Sm 23:13} + "Yet will I bring an heir unto thee, O inhabitant of Mareshah: he shall come unto Adullam the glory of Israel." {Mic 1:15}
