- Bozrah:
- Bozrah, Bezer, or Bostra, was situated in Arabia Deserta, and the eastern part of Edom; and, according to Eusebius, was 24 miles from Edrei. It afterwards belonged to Moab, and was given by Moses to Reuben, but again reverted to Edom. It is now called Boszra; and is described by Burckhardt as the largest town in the Haouran, including its ruins, though only inhabited by about twelve or fifteen families. It is situated in the open plain, two hours distant from Aare, and is at present the last inhabited place in the south-east extremity of the Haouran. It is of an oval shape, it greatest length being from east to west; and its circumference three quarters of an hour. "The swordª of the LORDª is filledª° with blood,ª it is made fatª° with fatness,ª¹ [and] with the bloodª¹ of lambsª and goats,ª with the fatª¹ of the kidneysª of rams:ª for¹ the LORDª hath a sacrificeª in Bozrah,ª and a greatª slaughterª in the landª of Idumea.ª" {Isa 34:6} + "Who¹ [is] this¹ that comethª° from Edom,ª¹ with dyedª° garmentsª from Bozrah?ª¹ this¹ [that is] gloriousª° in his apparel,ª travellingª° in the greatnessª of his strength?ª I¹ that speakª° in righteousness,ª mightyª to save.ª°" {Isa 63:1} + "For¹ I have swornª° by myself, saithª° the LORD,ª that¹ Bozrahª shall become¹ a desolation,ª a reproach,ª a waste,ª and a curse;ª and all¹ the citiesª thereof shall be¹ perpetualª wastes.ª" {Jer 49:13} + "Behold,¹ he shall come upª° and flyª° as the eagle,ª and spreadª° his wingsª over¹ Bozrah:ª and at that¹ dayª shall the heartª of the mighty menª of Edomª be¹ as the heartª of a womanª in her pangs.ª°" {Jer 49:22} + "But I will sendª° a fireª upon Teman,ª which shall devourª° the palacesª of Bozrah.ª" {Ams 1:12} + "I will surely²° assemble,ª° O Jacob,ª all¹ of thee; I will surely²° gatherª° the remnantª of Israel;ª I will putª° them togetherª as the sheepª of Bozrah,ª°² as the flockª in the midstª of their fold:ª they shall make great noiseª° by reason of [the multitude of] men.ª¹" {Mic 2:12}
