- the fatness:
- or, of the fatness, "Therefore Godª giveª° thee of the dewª¹ of heaven,ª and the fatnessª of the earth,ª and plentyª of cornª and wine:ª" {Gen 27:28}; It is here foretold, says Bp. Newton, that as to temporal advantages, the two brothers should be much alike. (See note on "Therefore Godª giveª° thee of the dewª¹ of heaven,ª and the fatnessª of the earth,ª and plentyª of cornª and wine:ª" {Gen 27:28}.) Esau had cattle, beasts, and substance in abundance, and he went to dwell in Mount Seir of his own accord. When the Israelites desired leave to pass through the territories of Edom, the country abounded with fruitful fields and vineyards ("Let us pass,ª° I pray thee,¹ through thy country:ª we will not¹ pass²° through¹ the fields,ª or through the vineyards,ª neither¹ will we drinkª° [of] the waterª of the wells:ª we will go²°¹ by the king'sª [high] way,ª we will not¹ turnª° to the right handª nor to the left,ª until¹¹ we have passedª° thy borders.ª" {Num 20:17}).
