- the smell of a field:
- A field where aromatic plants, flowers, fruits, and spices grew in abundance, with which these garments (see note on "And Rebekahª tookª°¹ goodly²¹ raimentª of her eldestª sonª Esau,ª which¹ [were] with¹ her in the house,ª and put them uponª°¹ Jacobª her youngerª son:ª" {Gen 27:15}) of Esau might probably have been perfumed by being laid up with them. "The fig treeª putteth forthª° her green figs,ª and the vinesª [with] the tender grapeª giveª° a [good] smell.ª Arise,ª° my love,ª my fair one,ª and come away.²°¹" {Sgs 2:13} + "Thy lips,ª O [my] spouse,ª dropª° [as] the honeycomb:ª honeyª and milkª [are] under¹ thy tongue;ª and the smellª of thy garmentsª [is] like the smellª of Lebanon.ª ... Spikenardª and saffron;ª calamusª and cinnamon,ª with¹ all¹ treesª of frankincense;ª myrrhª and aloes,ª with¹ all¹ the chiefª spices:ª" {Sgs 4:11-14} + "Let us get up earlyª° to the vineyards;ª let us seeª° if¹ the vineª flourish,ª° [whether] the tender grapeª appear,²°¹ [and] the pomegranatesª bud forth:ª° there¹ will I giveª° thee¹ my loves.ª ... The mandrakesª giveª° a smell,ª and at¹ our gatesª [are] all manner¹ of pleasantª [fruits], newª and¹ old,ª [which] I have laid upª° for thee, O my beloved.ª" {Sgs 7:12-13} + "His branchesª shall spread,²°¹ and his beautyª shall be¹ as the olive tree,ª and his smellª as Lebanon.ª ... They that dwellª° under his shadowª shall return;ª° they shall reviveª° [as] the corn,ª and growª° as the vine:ª the scentª thereof [shall be] as the wineª of Lebanon.ª" {Hsa 14:6-7}
