{Genesis 27:15} And Rebekah 7259 took 3947 z8799 x853 goodly y2532 x2530 raiment 899 of her eldest 1419 son 1121 Esau, 6215 which x834 [were] with x854 her in the house, 1004 and put them upon 3847 z8686 x853 Jacob 3290 her younger 6996 son: 1121
goodly raiment:
Heb. desirable, "And he came near,ª° and kissedª° him: and he smelledª°¹ the smellª of his raiment,ª and blessedª° him, and said,ª° See,ª° the smellª of my sonª [is] as the smellª of a fieldª which¹ the LORDª hath blessed:ª°" {Gen 27:27}; The Septuagint translates it "a goodly robe," which was a long garment that great men used to wear ("Bewareª° ofª the¹ scribes,ª which² desireª° to walkª° inª long robes,ª andª loveª° greetingsª inª the¹ markets,ª andª the highest seatsª inª the¹ synagogues,ª andª the chief roomsª atª feasts;ª" {Lke 20:46} + "Butª the¹ fatherª saidª° toª his²¹ servants,ª Bring forthª° the¹ bestª robe,ª andª put [it] onª° him;ª andª putª° a ringª onª hisª hand,ª andª shoesª onª [his] feet:ª" {Lke 15:22}). The priest afterwards in the law had "holy garments" to minister in ("And thou shalt makeª° holyª garmentsª for Aaronª thy brotherª for gloryª and for beauty.ª ... And these¹ [are] the garmentsª which¹ they shall make;ª° a breastplate,ª and an ephod,ª and a robe,ª and a broideredª coat,ª a mitre,ª and a girdle:ª and they shall makeª° holyª garmentsª for Aaronª thy brother,ª and his sons,ª that he may minister unto me in the priest's office.ª°" {Exd 28:2-4}). Whether the first-born before the law had such to minister in is not certain: for, had they been common garments, why did not Esau himself or his wives keep them? But being, in likelihood, holy robes, received from their ancestors, the mother of the family kept them in sweet chests, from moths and the like; whereupon it is said ("And he came near,ª° and kissedª° him: and he smelledª°¹ the smellª of his raiment,ª and blessedª° him, and said,ª° See,ª° the smellª of my sonª [is] as the smellª of a fieldª which¹ the LORDª hath blessed:ª°" {Gen 27:27}), "Isaac smelled the smell of his garments."
