- Esau:
- The word Esau has been generally considered to imply made, formed, or perfected; or perfect, robust, etc. But it appears to be a dialectical variation of the Arabic atha, to be covered with hair; whence athai, hairy, as no doubt the word Esau imports, in allusion to the circumstance of his being covered with red hair or down at his birth. "And Jacobª saidª° to¹ Rebekahª his mother,ª Behold,¹ Esauª my brotherª [is] a hairyª man,ª and I¹ [am] a smoothª man:ª" {Gen 27:11} + "And she putª° the skinsª of the kidsª of the goatsª upon¹ his hands,ª and upon¹ the smoothª of his neck:ª" {Gen 27:16} + "And he discernedª° him not,¹ because¹ his handsª were¹ hairy,ª as his brotherª Esau'sª hands:ª so he blessedª° him." {Gen 27:23}
