- We may see, says Calmet, by this and other passages of Scripture ("And the childrenª of Israelª smoteª° them not,¹ because¹ the princesª of the congregationª had swornª° unto them by the LORDª Godª of Israel.ª And all¹ the congregationª murmuredª° against¹ the princes.ª" {Jsh 9:18}), what the sentiments of the ancients were relative to an oath. They believed that they were bound precisely by what was spoken, and had no liberty to interpret the intentions of those by whom the oath was made.
