- Gerar:
- Gerar was a city of Arabia Petrea, under a king of the Philistines, 25 miles from Eleutheropolis beyond Daroma, in the south of Judah. From "And the borderª of the Canaanitesª was¹ from Sidon,ª¹ as thou comestª° to Gerar,ª unto¹ Gaza;ª as thou goest,ª° unto Sodom,ª and Gomorrah,ª and Admah,ª and Zeboim,ª even unto¹ Lasha.ª" {Gen 10:19}, it appears to have been situated in the angle where the south and west sides of Canaan met, and to have been not far from Gaza. Jerome, in his Hebrew Traditions on Genesis, says, from Gerar to Jerusalem was three days' journey. There was a wood near Gerar, spoken of by Theodoret; and a brook ("Then Abimelechª wentª° to¹ him from Gerar,ª¹ and Ahuzzathª one of his friends,ª and Phicholª the chief captainª of his army.ª" {Gen 26:26}), on which was a monastery, noticed by Sozomen. "And the borderª of the Canaanitesª was¹ from Sidon,ª¹ as thou comestª° to Gerar,ª unto¹ Gaza;ª as thou goest,ª° unto Sodom,ª and Gomorrah,ª and Admah,ª and Zeboim,ª even unto¹ Lasha.ª" {Gen 10:19} + "And there was¹ a famineª in the land,ª besideª¹ the firstª famineª that¹ was¹ in the daysª of Abraham.ª And Isaacª went²°¹ unto¹ Abimelechª kingª of the Philistinesª unto Gerar.ª" {Gen 26:1} + "And Isaacª dweltª° in Gerar:ª" {Gen 26:6} + "And the herdmenª° of Gerarª did striveª° with¹ Isaac'sª herdmen,ª° saying,ª° The waterª [is] ours: and he calledª° the nameª of the wellª Esek;ª because¹ they stroveª° with¹ him." {Gen 26:20} + "Then Abimelechª wentª° to¹ him from Gerar,ª¹ and Ahuzzathª one of his friends,ª and Phicholª the chief captainª of his army.ª" {Gen 26:26} + "And Asaª and the peopleª that¹ [were] with¹ him pursuedª° them unto¹ Gerar:ª and the Ethiopiansª¹ were overthrown,ª° that they could not¹ recoverª themselves; for¹ they were destroyedª° beforeª the LORD,ª and beforeª his host;ª and they carried awayª° veryª muchª° spoil.ª ... And they smoteª°¹ all¹ the citiesª round aboutª Gerar;ª for¹ the fearª of the LORDª came¹ upon¹ them: and they spoiledª°¹ all¹ the cities;ª for¹ there was¹ exceeding muchª spoilª in them." {2Ch 14:13-14}
