And there came two angels. Or, rather, "the two angels came," referring to those mentioned in the preceding chapter, and there called "men." It seems (from "And the men²¹ turned their facesª° from thence,¹¹ and went²°¹ toward Sodom:ª but Abrahamª stoodª° yetª beforeª the LORD.ª" {Gen 18:22}), that these two angels were sent to Sodom, while the third, who was the Lord or Jehovah, remained with Abraham. "And the LORDª appearedª° unto¹ him in the plainsª of Mamre:ª and he¹ satª° in the tentª doorª in the heatª of the day;ª ... And said,ª° My Lord,ª if¹ now¹ I have foundª° favourª in thy sight,ª pass not away,ª°¹ I pray thee,¹ from¹¹ thy servant:ª" {Gen 18:1-3} + "And the men²¹ turned their facesª° from thence,¹¹ and went²°¹ toward Sodom:ª but Abrahamª stoodª° yetª beforeª the LORD.ª" {Gen 18:22} |
