- Babel:
- that is, Confusion, The tower of Babel, Herodotus informs us, was a furlong or 660 feet, in length and breadth; and, according to Strabo, it rose to the same altitude. It was of a pyramidical form, consisting of eight square towers, gradually decreasing in breadth, with a winding ascent on the outside, so very broad as to allow horses and carriages to pass each other, and even to turn. This magnificent structure is so completely destroyed that its very site is doubtful; and when supposed to be discovered, in all cases exhibiting a heap of rubbish. "By these¹¹ were the islesª of the Gentilesª divided¹ in²° their lands;ª every oneª after his tongue,ª after their families,ª in their nations.ª" {Gen 10:5} + "And the beginningª of his kingdomª was¹ Babel,ª and Erech,ª and Accad,ª and Calneh,ª in the landª of Shinar.ª" {Gen 10:10} + "These¹ [are] the sonsª of Ham,ª after their families,ª after their tongues,ª in their countries,ª [and] in their nations.ª" {Gen 10:20} + "These¹ [are] the sonsª of Shem,ª after their families,ª after their tongues,ª in their lands,ª after their nations.ª" {Gen 10:31} + "The burdenª of Babylon,ª which¹ Isaiahª the sonª of Amozª did see.ª° ... What¹ shall [one] then answerª° the messengersª of the nation?ª That¹ the LORDª hath foundedª° Zion,ª and the poorª of his peopleª shall trustª° in it." {Isa 13:1-14:32} + "The wordª that¹ the LORDª spakeª° against¹ Babylonª [and] against¹ the landª of the Chaldeansª byª Jeremiahª the prophet.ª ... And thou shalt say,ª° Thus¹ shall Babylonª sink,ª° and shall not¹ riseª° fromª¹ the evilª that¹ I¹ will bringª° upon¹ her: and they shall be weary.ª° Thus¹ far¹ [are] the wordsª of Jeremiah.ª" {Jer 50:1-51:64} + "Ifª thereforeª the¹ wholeª churchª be come togetherª° intoª one place,ª andª allª speakª° with tongues,ª andª there come inª° [those that are] unlearned,ª orª unbelievers,ª will they²° notª sayª° thatª ye are mad?ª°" {1Co 14:23}
