Ham:
Ham signifies burnt or black; and this name was peculiarly significant of the regions allotted to his family. To the Cushites, or descendants of Cush, were allotted the hot southern regions of Asia, along the shores of the Persian Gulf, Susiana or Chusistan, etc.; to the sons of Canaan, Palestine and Syria; to the sons of Mizraim, Egypt and Libya, in Africa.
Cush:
"And it shall come to pass¹ in that¹ day,ª [that] the Lordª shall set²° his handª againª° the second timeª to recoverª°¹ the remnantª of his people,ª which¹ shall be left,ª° from Assyria,ª¹ and from Egypt,ª¹ and from Pathros,ª¹ and from Cush,ª¹ and from Elam,ª¹ and from Shinar,ª¹ and from Hamath,ª¹ and from the islandsª¹ of the sea.ª" {Isa 11:11}
Phut:
"Come up,ª° ye horses;ª and rage,ª° ye chariots;ª and let the mighty menª come forth;ª° the Ethiopiansª and the Libyans,ª that handleª° the shield;ª and the Lydians,ª that handleª° [and] bendª° the bow.ª" {Jer 46:9} *marg.
